| Frank: First word we’re going to talk about today, we heard this in the dialogue, let’s hear it, Echo. |
| Echo: 漂亮(Piàoliang) [natural native speed]. |
| Frank: This means “beautiful”. |
| Echo: The most common word to describe. Beautiful. 漂亮.(Piàoliang.) |
| Frank: The next word we wanted to teach you was this: |
| Echo: 好看。(hǎokàn.) |
| Frank: You’ve actually heard both of these separately before. |
| Echo: Yeah. 好看(hǎokàn) is more casual. |
| Frank: Right. It means “good looking”. The first part of that… |
| Echo: 好。(Hǎo) |
| Frank: Meaning “good”. You’ve heard this before. The second one 看(Kàn) |
| Echo: 好看(hǎokàn) [natural native speed]. |
| Frank: “To look or to see”. Good-looking. |
| Echo: 好看(hǎokàn) [natural native speed]. |
| Frank: Easy way to remember that. Our next word… |
| Echo: 美。(měi.) |
| Frank: Also means “beautiful”. You heard it in the dialogue like this: |
| Echo: 美女。(měinǚ.) |
| Frank: Beautiful girl or pretty girl. |
| Echo: Yeah. Right. |
| Frank: Now just like in America, you wouldn’t refer to a boy as pretty. |
| Echo: Right. |
| Frank: You’d call him handsome. So what’s the adjective for “handsome”? |
| Echo: 帥(shuài) [natural native speed]. |
| Frank: So a handsome guy is… |
| Echo: Like Frank, 帥哥(shuàigē) [natural native speed]. |
| Frank: You’re too good to me, Echo. Now, of course, not everybody is as good-looking as you and I. So somebody who’s not good-looking…. |
| Echo: 不好看.(Bù hǎokàn.) |
| Frank: Not good looking. Not good to look at. Also, you could say that they’re not beautiful. |
| Echo: 不漂亮。(Bù piàoliang.) |
| Frank: Our last word, this one’s interesting. |
| Echo: It’s a bit strong. |
| Frank: Yeah, it’s a bit strong. Let’s hear. |
| Echo: . 难看。(nánkàn.)It’s hard to look. |
| Frank: It’s literally hard to look at. So if it’s so ugly, they’re hard to look at. It’s just harsh. Let’s hear some sample sentences. “She is very pretty.” |
| Echo: 她很漂亮。(Tā hěn piàoliang.) |
| Frank: Her sister isn’t good-looking. |
| Echo: 她妹妹不好看。(Tā mèimei bù hǎokàn.) |
| Frank: He is really handsome. |
| Echo: 他真帅。(Tā zhēn shuài.) |
| Frank: My mom is extremely beautiful. |
| Echo: 我妈妈非常美。(Wǒ māmā fēicháng měi.) |
| Frank: And she is too. |

| Frank: That kid is really cute. |

| Frank: It means “extremely”, as in “we are extremely thirsty.” |
| Echo: 我们非常渴。(Wǒmen fēicháng kě.) |
| Frank: He is extremely ugly. |
| Echo: 他非常难看。(Tā fēicháng nánkàn.) |
| Frank: My friend is extremely beautiful. |
| Echo: 我的朋友非常美。(Wǒ de péngyǒu fēicháng měi.) |
| Frank: As always, you can say the sentence in the negative by replacing the adverb with…. |
| Echo: 不(Bù) |
| Frank: For example, “We’re not hungry” |
| Echo: 我们不饿。(Wǒmen bù è.) |
| Frank: Chinese is not difficult. |
| Echo: 中文不难。(Zhōngwén bù nán.) |
| Frank: Now if you mean something really negative, you can also put… |
| Echo: 不(Bù) |
| Frank: …after the adverb but before the adjective. It enhances litigation. Let’s hear it. Very not good. |
| Echo: 很不好。(Hěn bù hǎo.) |
| Frank: Really not good. |
| Echo: 真不好。(Zhēn bù hǎo.) |
| Frank: Extremely not good-looking. |
| Echo: 非常不好看。(Fēicháng bù hǎokàn.)that is 非常难看。(Fēicháng nánkàn.) |
