In Chinese, “thank you” is 谢谢(Xiè xie), and one time slowly 谢谢(Xiè xie). Now in Chinese, there of course are more polite ways to say this. The first step up would be 多谢(Duō xiè), that means “thank you very much”. One more time slowly, 多谢(Duō xiè). It’s one first tone which is the flat tone 多(duō), and then one falling tone 谢 (xiè). One more time guys, 多谢(Duō xiè). The word 多(duō) means “a lot” and 谢(xiè) means “thanks”. So literally it would mean “a lot of thanks”. |
The next step in politeness would be 我很感谢(Wǒ hěn gǎnxiè). That means I am very thankful. One more time slowly, 我很感谢(Wǒ hěn gǎnxiè). One more time guys, this is a long one, 我很感谢(Wǒ hěn gǎnxiè). This is a little bit complicated guys because we have three third tones in a row. The third tone goes down and comes back up. Now we have 我很感谢(Wǒ hěn gǎnxiè), but because there are three third tones in a row, it becomes 我很感谢(Wó hén gǎnxiè). Did you guys get that? One more time, 我(wǒ) is usually third tone but because it’s followed by 很(hěn) which is also third tone, it becomes second tone, 很(hěn) is usually third tone but because it’s followed by 感(gǎn) which is also third tone, it becomes second tone, 感谢(gǎnxiè). So guys altogether, it would be second tone, rising tone, second tone, rising, third tone again, falling and rising and then the last one is fourth tone, just the falling tone. So the phrase again is 我很感谢(Wó hén gǎnxiè), 我(wǒ) means I, 很(hěn) means very, it’s often used with adjectives and you can use it all over the place, 感谢(gǎn xiè) means thankful, 感(gǎn) means feeling and 谢(xiè) means thanks. All right, so let’s recap one more time in order of the level of politeness. The first one I went over was 谢谢(Xiè xie) is the most commonly used form of thank you. You use it when you are leaving a store, when you receive some goods. You can use it even when someone holds the door open for you. It is the most commonly used form of thank you and it is probably the only one that you will hear other people use. The next step up is 多谢(Duō xiè) means thank you very much. You can use this in a store when somebody gives you something or when you receive something from a friend or a relative. You can throw this in for a nice change of pace. Sometimes you get tired of using the word 谢谢(Xiè xie) all the time and you want to make this time stand out. That time, you can say 多谢(Duō xiè) The last level of politeness is 我很感谢(Wó hén gǎnxiè). Now I warn you. This is only for experts. This one says that you are very thankful and it makes this time stand out in their mind. It makes them know that you really enjoyed what you received from them or what they have done for you. So remember guys, it is 我很感谢(Wó hén gǎnxiè). All right, to close our today’s lesson, we’d like you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of a phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 加油(Jiā yóu)! 加油(Jiā yóu) is a phrase of encouragement used to try to get people to try their best. People often say at supporting events “加油加油!(Jiāyóu jiāyóu!)”. Okay here we go. The most common form of thank you, 谢谢(Xiè xie). The more polite form, that means thank you very much, 多谢(Duō xiè). The most polite form, I am very thankful, 我很感谢(Wó hén gǎnxiè). |
