| Today is going to be a very simple and very necessary phrase. What time is it? My boss and I were literally hitting ourselves because we forgot to do this and now we are doing it right at the end. So there is no time left. So the way you say this in Chinese is 几点(Jí diǎn?). The tones are second tone 几(jí) and then third tone 点(diǎn). Normally 几(jǐ) is third tone but two third tones in a row means the first tone becomes a second tone, 几点(Jí diǎn?). 几(jǐ) means how many but it’s usually only used with small numbers, numbers up to maybe 15 and 点(diǎn) is a word that would translate to approximately o'clock in English, o’ clock. So 几点(Jí diǎn?) means how many o'clock or what time. This will become a little bit more clear once I explain how to say the time. So let’s do that. If you want to say the time, you just say the number of the hour and then you follow that by 点(diǎn) just like o'clock in English. So let’s just run through the times really quickly. 1 o’ clock, 一点(yī diǎn), 1st tone, third tone, 一点(yī diǎn). 2 o’ clock, 两点(liáng diǎn), second tone, normally 两(liǎng) is third tone but it becomes a second tone in this instance with 点(diǎn) being a third tone after it. So 两点(liáng diǎn), second tone, third tone, 两点(liáng diǎn). 3 o’ clock, 三点(sān diǎn), first tone, third tone, 三点(sān diǎn). 4 o'clock, 四点(sì diǎn), fourth tone, third tone, 四点(sì diǎn). 5 o'clock, 五点(wú diǎn), again this is a third tone that becomes a second tone, 五(wǔ) and 点(diǎn) third tone. So second tone, third tone, 五点(wú diǎn). 6 o’ clock, 六点(liù diǎn), fourth tone, third tone, 六点(liù diǎn). 7 o’ clock, 七点(qī diǎn), first tone, third tone, 七点(qī diǎn). 8 o’ clock, 八点(bā diǎn), first tone, third tone, 八点(bā diǎn). 9 o’ clock, 九点(jiú diǎn), again a third tone that becomes a second tone, 九点(jiú diǎn). So second tone, third tone, 九点(jiú diǎn). 10 o'clock, 十点(shí diǎn), second tone, third tone, 十点(shí diǎn). 11 o’ clock, 十一点(shí yī diǎn), second tone, first tone, third tone, 十一点(shí yī diǎn). 12 o’ clock, 十二点(shí èr diǎn), second tone, fourth tone, third tone, 十二点(shí èr diǎn). |
