Hey guys, in the previous lesson, we went over the numbers 100 through 1000. At the end of that lesson, I said that the 1000s would be a lot like the 100s and they are. The way you do 1000s is you take the number for 1000 千(qiān), first tone, the flat tone, 千(qiān), you take that word 千(qiān) and then you take a number from 1 to 9 and put it in front of it. So the word for 3000 would be 3 and 1000, 三千(sān qiān). 三(sān) if you remember is the word for 3 and like I just said 千(qiān) means 1000. So 3 1000 just like English and well just like the 100s. So real quick, we are going to go over 1 through 9 again. Get ready, get set go. 1 一(yī) first tone, 一(yī). 2 二(èr) fourth tone, 二(èr). 3 三(sān) first tone, 三(sān). 4 四(sì) fourth tone, 四(sì). 5 五(wǔ) third tone, 五(wǔ). 6 六(liù) fourth tone, 六(liù). 7 七(qī) first tone, 七(qī). 8 八(bā) first tone, 八(bā). 9 九(jiǔ) third tone, 九(jiǔ). Like I said, the way that you say 2000 or 4000 or 7000 is you just take one of these numbers 1 through 9 and put them in front of 千(qiān), the word for 1000. So let’s go over 1000 through 9000, ready, here we go. 1000 一千(yī qiān), first tone, [一(yī) will change to the fourth tone "yì" before a non-fourth tone word, so 一千 pronounces "yì qiān"], 一千(yì qiān). 2000 两千(liǎng qiān), third tone, first tone, 两千(liǎng qiān), but some of you are expecting 二千(èr qiān), but there are some cases and I’ve said this before when we introduced 二(èr) and 两(liǎng), there are some cases when you use 两(liǎng) and some cases when you use 二(èr). In the past, we went over 20 which was 二十(èr shí) and we went over 200 which was 二百(èr bǎi), but with thousands, we say 两千(liǎng qiān). We use the word 两(liǎng), this means 2 also, it’s third tone, 两(liǎng) and you say 两千(liǎng qiān). So one more time 两千(liǎng qiān), third tone, first tone, 两千(liǎng qiān). 3000 三千(sān qiān), first tone, first tone, 三千(sān qiān). 4000 四千(sì qiān), fourth tone, first tone. 5000 五千(wǔ qiān), 5000 五千(wǔ qiān), third tone, first tone. 6000 六千(liù qiān), 6000 六千(liù qiān), fourth tone, first tone, 六千(liù qiān). 7000 七千(qī qiān), first tone, first tone, 七千(qī qiān). 8000 八千(bā qiān), first tone, first tone, 八千(bā qiān). 9000 九千(jiǔ qiān), first tone, first tone, 九千(jiǔ qiān). 10,000 oh….wait! We have to stop here. 10000 is something different in Chinese. So I hope you paid attention to 1000 through 9000. If you want to take this time right now to rewind and go through it again, I am waiting. All right cool we are going to 10000. Chinese has a different numerical system than the west. They go by 10000s instead of 1000s. In America, we go 100, 200 to 900, then a 1000 and then we talk about 10,000 and 100,000. In Chinese, there is a word for 10,000 which is a separate unit. The word for 10,000 is 万(wàn), one more time, 万(wàn), fourth tone, 万(wàn) and then you talk about 1 万(wàn) or 2 万(wàn) or 10 万(wàn) or 100 万(wàn) or a 1000 万(wàn), just like we talk about 10000s or 100,000s and then we go up to millions and then you talk about 10 millions or a 100 millions. You would never talk about 1000 millions. In Chinese, you would never talk about 一万万(yī wàn wàn), you would never talk about 10,000 ten thousands but you would talk about 100 ten thousands or 10 ten thousands. So let’s go over this really quickly and then we got to end the lesson, I am sorry guys. The word for 10,000 in Chinese is 万(wàn) and this is just like 1000s or 100s in Chinese. You just take numbers from 1 to 10 or in this case 10 or 100 or 200 or 300 or 30 or 45, any number you want and you put it in front of 万(wàn) So 10,000 is 一万(yí wàn) and then you just keep doing numbers from this. You can say 40,000, 4 万(wàn) , 四万(sì wàn) or 400,000, 40 万(wàn), 四十万(sì shí wàn). |
