Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Chinese Season 1, Lesson 18 - Possession. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about possession in Chinese.

Eric: Here's the informal way to ask 'Do you have a pen?' in Chinese.
Cho: [Normal] 有笔吗?(yǒu bǐ ma ?)
Eric: First is a verb meaning 'to have'
Cho: [Normal] 有 [Slow] 有 (yǒu)
Eric: Next is the noun meaning 'pen'
Cho: [Normal] 笔 [Slow] 笔(bǐ)
Eric: Last is the question marker.
Cho: [Normal] 吗 [Slow] 吗(ma)
Eric: Listen again to the informal phrase meaning 'Do you have a pen?'

Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Cho: Although Nǐ yǒu qìchē ma? and Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu qìchē? both mean “do you have a car?”, Nǐ yǒu qìchē ma? is a little more formal than Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu qìchē? When you say Nǐ yǒu méiyǒu qìchē ?, you should be be careful about your tone, or you might sound rude.
