Lesson Transcript

Do you have feeling with him?

(天空乌云密布,)我感觉马上要下雨了。

(表示一种判断。)

感受是用来表达更深层次的意思,而感觉一般用来表达相对浅显的想法。

Hi, TARIK,

Thank you for the question.

投币 means "put the coin into the box".

On the bus, no one selling tickets, so we put coins into a box to pay the fare.

Thanks, Olivia! I was not expecting such succinct answers to my questions. Why can't textbooks give answers like this? ;)

Hi Mark,

Thank you for pointing out the missing pinyin, it's fixed now

Most Asian languages have the tendency to have long sentence segments; in general, the comma (,) is used to join together clauses that deal with a certain topic or line of thinking. As such, what would appear to an English speaker to be a comma splice is very commonly seen in Chinese writing. Often, the entirety of a long paragraph can consist of clauses joined by commas, with the sole period coming only at the end.

Regarding the adverbs 就 (jiù) and 才 (cái) (nowadays 纔 is rarely used):

就 (jiù) is used before a verb to suggest the earliness, quickness, or sooner than expected of the action; while 才 (cái) is the opposite, it suggests the tardiness or lateness of an action as perceived by the speaker, sometimes it expresses anxiety, impatience, anger, etc. For examples:

他十六岁就大学毕业。"He was only 16 when she graduated from university."

他二十六岁才大学毕业。"He didn’t graduate from university until he was 26."

While I'm at it, I'd like to make a respectful request for two items:

1) some notes on Chinese punctuation. Certain Chinese sentences seem to go on forever, relieved by nothing but commas. To an English speaker, these sentences appear infeasibly long (unless one happens to be reading James Joyce, which I cannot recommend). In some of the older literature I've read, there is no punctuation at all (a situation that can only be described as inhumane, though I do not hold you responsible; you are innocent bystanders, just as I am). So I'd keenly like to see some rules about where to insert periods and commas.

2) a comprehensive discussion concerning the difference between 就 and 纔(才), particularly when these words are functioning in a capacity that is equivalent to the English conjunction, "then."

So now you have my 聖誕 list!

The pinyin in the lesson notes is missing some words in 3. after "便不會在." (should be "bian bu hui zai tamen shenshang zai duo . . ." instead of "bian bu hui zai zai duo. . .").

Hi 唐博,

Actually a lot of glass are like this. Because during the day, there is more light from the outside, so it's not as transparent as it's at night.

Hi ~ in the example sentences for this lesson, there is a sentence about a kind of glass which is only transparent at night, but not during the day. Maybe there is an obvious answer I am overlooking, but I want to ask - what kind of glass is this? I won't be able to sleep until I know! ^_^

谢谢你们!

Hi 马丽塔,

Good question!

Although both terms are translated as "innocent", they're used very differently. One may use 天真 to describe a person's characteristics; while 无辜 is related to guilt and crime.

天真 = innocent; naive; artless

天 (tiān) "sky; day; natural"

真 (zhēn) "genuine; true"

无辜 = innocent (not guilty)

无 (wú) "not; without"

辜 (gū) "guilt, sin; disappoint"

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,

Olivia

careyxxx,
