All right guys, we are back. Last time, we went over finishing a meal. We talked about getting the check and how to say you will pay next time for somebody who is not willing to let you pay this time. Now let’s talk a little bit about actually paying the bill. In China, only the fanciest and most foreigner oriented restaurants take credit cards. In China, there are a lot and I mean a lot of restaurants that just don’t take credit cards. Most of your neighborhood restaurants, they don’t even understand why you pulled out your credit card. What does that do? What is that? Why would you expect me to take this piece of plastic? They of course know what a credit card is but they’ve never had anyone try to use it in their store. So always remember to bring cash. You really don’t want to be in the situation to tell somebody, you have to go to an ATM now when you want to pay for your bill. That and ATMs aren’t necessarily readily available in China. That’s the other thing. Make sure you get cash when you have a chance and then make sure you watch your wallet. Now if you really want to pay by credit card, maybe it’s a business account, I don’t know. If you really like your piece of plastic, before you start your meal, you can say 可以用信用卡吗?(Kěyǐ yòng xìnyòngkǎ ma?) that means can I use a credit card. 可以用信用卡吗?(Kěyǐ yòng xìnyòngkǎ ma?) All right, let’s break it down first with the meaning. 可以(kě yǐ) means may or to be allowed to, can in the way that you are asking for permission. 用(yòng) means use. 信用卡(xìn yòng kǎ) means credit card and then 吗(ma) is just a particle that makes the sentence a question. It’s like putting a question mark at the end of the sentence. So can use credit card question. So guys, let’s go over this one more time and then we will do the tones. 可以用信用卡吗?(Kěyǐ yòng xìnyòngkǎ ma?) All right 可以(kě yǐ) is two third tones in a row. So the first one becomes a second tone, rising tone. So rising tone, then third tone, the falling rising tone 可以(ké yǐ). 用(yòng) is fourth tone, the falling tone 用(yòng). 信用卡(xìn yòng kǎ) is fourth tone, fourth tone and then third tone. Falling tone, falling tone, falling rising tone, 信用卡(xìn yòng kǎ). And then the last one 吗(ma) has no tone. Isn’t that easy. So let’s do it altogether 可以用信用卡吗?(Kéyǐ yòng xìnyòngkǎ ma?) All right, to close our today’s lesson, we would like you to practice what we’ve just learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of a phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answers. So 加油!(Jiā yóu!) Can I use a credit card 可以用信用卡吗?(Kéyǐ yòng xìnyòngkǎ ma?) |

Hello kxhoneysuckle@foxmail.com,
Thank you for your comment. There are still quite a lot of people using cash in China, but indeed like you said, more and more people are using electronic money nowadays because it's very convenient.
Thank you for learning with us, let us know if you have any questions.

1 ATMs weren’t necessarily readily available in China a few yrs ago.
2 Now even the persons who sell street food and peasants selling vegetables by the roads are paid bt
WeChat Pay and Alipay because cash is already pretty much dead in China.
