INTRODUCTION
Echo: 嗨,大家好,我是Echo. (Hāi, dàjiā hǎo, wǒ shì Echo.) and welcome to chineseclass101.
Dave: Hi and I am Dave and with us, you will learn to speak Chinese with fun and effective lessons.
Echo: Right and we also provide you with cultural insights.
Dave: As well as tips you won’t find in a textbook. Today is lesson 14 in season 2 of our elementary series, The Rising Price of Chinese Oil.
Echo: Right. Today we are talking about both gasoline and cooking oil.
Dave: Yes two things that are essential to the Chinese way of life.
Echo: And the conversation is about how to save money.
Dave: And also how to stay healthy.
Echo: Right. The two speakers in the dialogue are friends.
Dave: And they are at home. So they will both be speaking casually.
Echo: 没错 (Méi cuò) Okay so let’s get to the dialogue now.
DIALOGUE
A:油又涨价了。 (yóu yòu zhàngjiàle.)
B:那做饭少放点儿。 (nā zuòfàn shǎo fàng diǎnr.)
A:嗯? (en?)
B:不但省钱,而且健康。 (bùdàn shěngqián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
A:不是吃的油,是汽油! (bù shì chī de yóu, shì qìyóu!)
B:哦,那别开车了,走路吧。 (ò, nà bié kāichēle, zǒulùba.)
A:什么? (shénme?)
B:不但省钱,而且健康。 (bùdàn shěngqián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: One more time, a bit slower.

A:什么? (shénme?)
B:不但省钱,而且健康。 (bùdàn shěngqián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: One more time with English.
Echo: 油又涨价了。 (yóu yòu zhàngjiàle.)
Dave: Oil is getting expensive again.
Echo: 那做饭少放点儿。 (nā zuòfàn shǎo fàng diǎnr.)
Dave: Then when you cook, use less oil.
Echo: 嗯? (en?) (bù shì chī de yóu, shì qìyóu!)
Dave: Hah!
Echo: 不但省钱,而且健康。 (bùdàn shěngqián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: Not only does it save you money but it is also healthier.
Echo: 不是吃的油,是汽油! (bù shì chī de yóu, shì qìyóu!)
Dave: It’s not oil for cooking, it’s gasoline.
Echo: 哦,那别开车了,走路吧。 (ò, nà bié kāichēle, zǒulùba.)
Dave: Ah then don’t drive. How about you walk?
Echo: 什么? (shénme?)
Dave: What?
Echo: 不但省钱,而且健康。 (bùdàn shěngqián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: Not only does it save you money, but it is also healthier.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Dave: So it looks like we have a very optimistic person trying to put a positive spin on things.
Echo: Yeah both points are true. Using less oil saves you money and it is healthier.
Dave: Regardless if it is cooking oil or gasoline.
Echo: Yeah cooking oil is one of the most important ingredients to Chinese cooking.
Dave: I know. At the grocery store, I often see little old ladies hauling away huge containers of vegetable oil.
Echo: Yeah.
Dave: It’s really something to see.
Echo: Well maybe using more oil is healthy too since you have to carry it all the way home.
Dave: Now Echo, you are being the optimist.
Echo: Yeah that’s me. Also I am very positive about our vocab section.
Dave: Yeah since cars and cooking are all the rage in China, we have a special vocab section that focuses just on that.
Echo: Right.
Dave: And now the vocab section.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Dave: Okay. Let’s take a closer look at usage for some of the words and phrases in this lesson.
Echo: Okay. The first word we are going to look at is 油。 (Yóu.)
Dave: Cooking oil.
Echo: 油。 (Yóu.)
Dave: And this is the generic term for cooking oil because there are many different kinds.
Echo: 油太贵了。 (Yóu tài guìle.)
Dave: Cooking oil is too expensive.
Echo: 油太贵了。 (Yóu tài guìle.)
Dave: And when cooking oil becomes more expensive, we use this word.
Echo: 涨价。(Zhǎng jià.)
Dave: To rise in price.
Echo: 涨价。 (Zhǎng jià.)
Dave: To rise in price or inflation.
Echo: 房子涨价太快。 (Fángzi zhǎng jià tài kuài.)
Dave: Housing prices are rising too fast.
Echo: 房子涨价太快。 (Fángzi zhǎng jià tài kuài.)
Dave: And that last sentence is very true. Houses in Beijing are really, really expensive.
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.)
Dave: Okay. Our next word is
Echo: 降价。 (Jiàngjià)
Dave: To fall in price.
Echo: 降价。 (Jiàngjià)
Dave: To fall in price or to depreciate.
Echo: 电脑降价了。 (Diànnǎo jiàngjiàle.)
Dave: Computer prices have fallen.
Echo: 电脑降价了。放。(Diànnǎo jiàngjiàle. Fàng)
Dave: To place.
Echo: 放,多放点糖。 (Fàng, duō fàng diǎn táng.)
Dave: Add more sugar.
Echo: 多放点糖。 (Duō fàng diǎn táng.)
Dave: To put more sugar.
Echo: 对。 (Duì)
Dave: This next phrase we will go over more in depth in the grammar section but Echo, why don’t you introduce us to it here first?
Echo: Okay 不但,而且。 (Bùdàn, érqiě.)
Dave: Not only, moreover.
Echo: 不但,而且。这个不但好用,而且便宜。 (Bùdàn, érqiě. Zhège bùdàn hǎo yòng, érqiě piányí.)
Dave: Not only is it useful, but it is cheap too.
Echo: 这个不但好用,而且便宜。(Zhège bùdàn hǎo yòng, érqiě piányí.)
Dave: Not only is it useful, moreover it’s cheap and like I just mentioned, we will be going over that pattern in the grammar section. So don’t go anywhere.
Echo: Yeah 省钱。(Shěng qián.)
Dave: Ah something we are all interested in. To save money.
Echo: 省钱。自己做饭更省钱。(Shěng qián. Zìjǐ zuò fàn gèng shěng qián.)
Dave: Cooking for yourself saves money.
Echo: 自己做饭更省钱。 (Zìjǐ zuò fàn gèng shěng qián.)
Dave: And I think it tastes better too…
Echo: Yeah I agree and it is more 健康。 (Jiànkāng.)
Dave: Healthy.
Echo: 健康。 (Jiànkāng.)
Dave: And this seems to be on everybody’s mind here in China.
Echo: Yeah.
Dave: Ways to stay healthy.
Echo: 对,喝牛奶对身体健康。 (Duì, hē niúnǎi duì shēntǐ jiànkāng.)
Dave: Drinking milk is good for your health.
Echo: 喝牛奶对身体健康。 (hē niúnǎi duì shēntǐ jiànkāng.)
Dave: And that’s probably the closest Chinese expression to milk, it does a body good.
Echo: Yeah.
Dave: Which is a advertising campaign in America. Okay the next few words have to do with transportation. Echo, what is our first word?
Echo: 汽油。 (Qìyóu.)
Dave: Gasoline.
Echo: 我的车没有汽油了。 (Wǒ de chē méiyǒu qìyóule.)
Dave: My car is out of gas.
Echo: 我的车没有汽油了。 (Wǒ de chē méiyǒu qìyóule.)
Dave: One of the interesting things here in China is that for so many cars on the road, I rarely see gas stations.
Echo: That’s because they are hidden.
Dave: Ah so to get to the gas station, you must
Echo: 开车。 (Kāichē.)
Dave: To drive.
Echo: 开车。 (Kāichē.)
Dave: If you are on a cross country drive, you can use this next sentence.
Echo: 你休息吧,我开车。 (Nǐ xiūxí ba, wǒ kāichē.)
Dave: You have a rest, I will drive.
Echo: 你休息吧,我开车。 (Nǐ xiūxí ba, wǒ kāichē.)
Dave: One way I usually get around is by this.
Echo: 走路。 (Zǒulù.)
Dave: To walk.
Echo: 走路。多走路,身体好。 (Zǒulù. Duō zǒulù, shēntǐ hǎo.)
Dave: Walk a lot, it does a body good.
Echo: 多走路,身体好。 (Duō zǒulù, shēntǐ hǎo.)
Dave: You know, what else is good for your body?
Echo: Uhoo…
Dave: Our grammar section.
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.)

Lesson focus

Dave: It’s grammar time. Okay today’s grammar point is about how to use the not only but also pattern.
Echo: 不但,而且。 (Bùdàn, érqiě.)
Dave: We use this when we are comparing two qualities of the same object.
Echo: 不但,而且。 (Bùdàn, érqiě.)
Dave: In the first part of the structure, we introduce one word or clause.
Echo: And in the second part, we use an even stronger word or clause.
Dave: Right. So let’s take a look at an example from our dialogue.
Echo: 不但省钱,而且健康。 (Bùdàn shěng qián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: Not only does it save money, moreover it’s healthy.
Echo: 不但省钱,而且健康。 (Bùdàn shěng qián, érqiě jiànkāng.)
Dave: So Echo, let’s first review the formula for this grammar structure and then introduce our listeners to some useful examples.
Echo: The formula is 不但 (Bùdàn) plus word 1 or clause 1 而且 (Érqiě) plus word 2 or clause 2.
Dave: And remember, the second clause means something even more than the first clause.
Echo: Yes.
Dave: So on to our first example.
Echo: 她不但漂亮而且聪明。 (Tā bùdàn piàoliang érqiě cōngmíng)
Dave: Not only is she beautiful, but she is smart too.
Echo: 她不但漂亮而且聪明。 (Tā bùdàn piàoliang érqiě cōngmíng)
Dave: The two attributes that we are recognizing are beauty and intelligence.
Echo: Yeah 这里的汽油不但贵,而且质量不好。 (Zhèlǐ de qìyóu bùdàn guì, érqiě zhìliàng bù hǎo.)
Dave: Not only is this gasoline expensive, but it’s poor quality too.
Echo: 这里的汽油不但贵,而且质量不好。 (Zhèlǐ de qìyóu bùdàn guì, érqiě zhìliàng bù hǎo.)
Dave: Notice that we can attach negative attributes to an object too, not just positive ones.
Echo: 没错。他不但会做饭,而且做得很不错。 (Méi cuò. Tā bùdàn huì zuò fàn, érqiě zuò dé hěn bùcuò.)
Dave: Not only can she cook food but the food also tastes really good.
Echo: 他不但会做饭,而且做得很不错。 (Tā bùdàn huì zuò fàn, érqiě zuò dé hěn bùcuò.)

Outro

Dave: Well that just about does it for today. Before we go, we want to tell you about a way to improve your pronunciation drastically.
Echo: The voice recording tool.
Dave: Yes the voice recording tool in the premium learning center.
Echo: Record your voice with a click of a button
Dave: And then play it back just as easily.
Echo: So you record your voice and then listen to it.
Dave: Compare it to the native speakers
Echo: And adjust your pronunciation.
Dave: This will help you improve your pronunciation fast.
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.)
Dave: Okay that’s it for today. From Beijing, I am Dave.
Echo: 我是Echo. (Wǒ shì Echo.)
Dave: And we will see you next week.
Echo: 我们下次见 (Wǒmen xià cì jiàn) Bye bye.
Dave: Bye bye.
