INTRODUCTION |
Victor: 大家好,我是 Victor。 (Dàjiā hǎo, wǒ shì Victor.) |
Amber: And I’m Amber. Welcome back to Gengo Chinese. This is Lesson 30, the final lesson! |
Victor: Yeah. Parting is Sweet and Sour. |
Amber: It is. |
Victor: Oh, tears. |
Amber: Well, Victor, we’ve reached the end of our destination, it seems. |
Victor: Yeah, the end, but just the beginning of our Chinese learning journey. |
Amber: Yes. Well, today, Mike and Lili say 再见 (zàijiàn)… for now. |
Victor: Yeah and promised to keep in touch. |
Amber: Yeah, the parting is so sad. Okay, Well, let’s put it off as long as possible by first doing a little review of the last lesson. |
Victor: Yes. So we had a little Shanghai tour and we heard about a couple of important historical figures in Chinese history, Song Jingling and Sun Yatsen. |
Amber: Mm, and we also learned a couple of places to visit, which were 新天地 (Xīntiāndì) and 人民广场 (Rénmín Guǎngchǎng). |
Victor: We also learned an important use of the word 就是 (jiùshì), a word that comes up often in Chinese, and is used to confirm or emphasize something. |
Amber: Yeah and we also learned that sometimes, the particle 了 (le) at the end of a sentence can signify a change in status or situation. |
Victor: So what will we learn today? Well, it’s just the goodbye lesson, so some ways to say goodbye. Let’s listen in. |
Amber: So in this lesson, you’ll learn how to part with a friend in Chinese. |
Victor: This conversation takes place on the street. |
Amber: And it’s between our characters, Mike and Lili. Let’s listen to what they say. |

Lili: 你还回来吗? (Nǐ hái huílái ma?) |
Mike: 会的。这儿有很多工作机会。 (Huì de. Zhèr yǒu hěn duō gōngzuò jīhuì.) |

Mike: 谢谢,再见。 (Xièxiè, zàijiàn.) |
Lili: 再见。 (Zàijiàn.) |
Victor: 重复一次, 加英文翻译。 (Chóngfù yīcì, jiā yīngwén fānyì.) |
Amber: One more time, with the English. |
Lili: 我今天很开心,谢谢你。 (Wǒ jīntiān hěn kāixīn, xièxiè nǐ.) |
Amber: I had a really nice time today, thank you. |
Mike: 我也是,我没想到上海这么大。 (Wǒ yě shì, wǒ méi xiǎngdào Shànghǎi zhème dà.) |
Amber: Me too, I didn't realize Shanghai was so big. |
Lili: 对啊,我也没想到。 (Duì a, wǒ yě méi xiǎngdào.) |
Amber: Yeah, I didn't realize either. |
Mike: 可惜,我明天要走了。 (Kěxī, wǒ míngtiān yào zǒu le.) |
Amber: It's too bad I have to leave tomorrow. |
Lili: 你还回来吗? (Nǐ hái huílái ma?) |
Amber: Are you going to come back again? |
Mike: 会的。这儿有很多工作机会。 (Huì de. Zhèr yǒu hěn duō gōngzuò jīhuì.) |
Amber: I will. There are a lot of work opportunities here. |
Lili: 好。 (Hǎo.) |
Amber: Good. |
Mike: 保持联络。我还要学汉语呢。 (Bǎochíliánluò. Wǒ hái yào xué hànyǔ ne.) |
Amber: Keep in touch. I need to keep studying Chinese. |
Lili: 好啊。慢走。 (Hǎo a. Mànzǒu.) |
Amber: All right. Take care. |
Mike: 谢谢,再见。 (Xièxiè, zàijiàn.) |
Amber: Thanks, goodbye. |
Lili: 再见。 (Zàijiàn.) |
Amber: Goodbye. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Amber: Sad! |
Victor: But it’s not goodbye though, Amber, it’s just 再见 (zàijiàn). |
Amber: Ah, right, which is actually, technically, “see you again.” |
Victor: It’s beautiful, isn’t it? |
Amber: Yeah! |
Victor: 再见 (zàijiàn), yeah. |
Amber: Well, there’s lots of good goodbye words here, sort of sweet goodbye words, so let’s take a look at the vocab. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Amber: Okay. Let’s take a closer look at the usage for some of these words and phrases. Okay, so, it’s not all sad because our first word starts out with a happy note. |
Victor: Yeah, after their day together, Lili declares it 很开心 (hěn kāixīn). |
Amber: Yes, today was very 开心 (kāixīn), which means “happy.” |
Victor: 今天很开心。 (Jīntiān hěn kāixīn.) |
Amber: It’s 1st tone, 1st tone. It’s kind of like us saying, “I had a great time today.” |
Victor: Yeah, and the overwhelming feeling was that of, they both never realized Shanghai was so big. |
Amber: Yeah. I think everyone has that feeling, once they actually get a grasp on the magnitude of the place. I have to say, I too never realized Shanghai was so big. |
Victor: 没想到上海这么大。 (Méi xiǎngdào shànghǎi zhème dà.) |
Amber: Mm, so a great phrase in this sentence, which is “I didn’t realize.” |
Victor: 我没想到 (wǒ méi xiǎngdào) |
Amber: So 我 (wǒ) being “I” and then the 没想到 (méi xiǎngdào). |
Victor: 没 (Méi) is 2nd tone, 想 (xiǎng) is 3rd tone, and 到 (dào) is 4th tone. |
Amber: Yeah, and we could probably use this in other ways too, right, Victor? Like, for example, let’s say your fans, Victor, they listen to you in this whole series and then one day, maybe they meet you and they will say, “I never realized you were so handsome!” Like that. |
Victor: Yeah, just like that. |
Amber: So, they say… |
Victor: Well, in that case, if you wanna say somebody is very handsome, you can say, 没想到 你这么帅 (méi xiǎngdào nǐ zhème shuài). |
Amber: Right, so “I didn’t realize you were so handsome” is what that means, which also leads to our next little phrase, which is…? |
Victor: We’ve heard this 这么 (zhème) before. |
Amber: Which leads to our next part of the phrase, which is…? |
Victor: 这么大 (zhème dà) |
Amber: Yeah. Which we’ve heard this 这么 (zhème) before. |
Victor: Right. |
Amber: It’s used to mean “so” or “such” to emphasize something. |
Victor: And of course, our word for “big” here is 大 (dà), 4th tone. |
Amber: So yes, we can all agree, Shanghai is very 大 (dà), “very big.” |
Victor: Okay, but now, onto other things. We heard a word of pity… it is 可惜 (kěxī) - 可 (kě) is a 3rd tone, 惜 (xī) is 1st tone. |
Amber: Yeah, and 可惜 (kěxī) is an expression you can use to mean sort of like “what a shame” or “what a pity,” just by saying this one word. |
Victor: Right. We kind of use 可惜 (kěxī) like “too bad” in English. |
Amber: Yeah, like we’re gonna say “可惜 (kěxī) Brad Pitt is already married,” something like that. |
Victor: Such a pity. |
Amber: Such a pity. Okay, but next, we hear some good news and that is that Mike will come back. |
Victor: Yes, “come back” or “to return” is 回来 (huílái) - 回 (huí) is 2nd tone, 来 (lái) is also 2nd tone. |
Amber: Yeah, and a lot of people will return to China for the same reason Mike gave. |
Victor: Because there are a lot of 工作机会 (gōngzuò jīhuì). We've heard the word for “work” before, 工作 (gōngzuò), and 机会 (jīhuì) - 机 (jī), 1st tone; 会 (huì), 4th tone, means “opportunity.” |
Amber: Yeah, that’s right. So, now, just like he did way back in the old days when he gave her his 名片 (míngpiàn), his “name card,” he tells her once again to keep in touch. What was that phrase again? |
Victor: 保持联络 (bǎochí liánluò) |
Amber: Right. 保持 (Bǎochí) means “to keep,” 3rd tone, 2nd tone. |
Victor: 联络 (Liánluò) is “contact” - 联 (lián) is 2nd tone and 络 (luò) is 4th tone. |
Amber: Yeah, and, last, but not the least, Lili wishes him well by saying… |
Victor: 慢走 (Mànzǒu). 慢走 (Mànzǒu) - 慢 (màn) is 4th tone, 走 (zǒu) is a 3rd tone. |
Victor: Yeah and it’s kind of like a nice farewell. It kind of means how we say “take care” in English, something like that. |
Victor: Right. It literally means “walk slowly.” |
Amber: Mm, like they don’t want him to leave. |
Victor: Right. |
Amber: Okay. So, onto today’s grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Amber: In today’s grammar, we learned a phrase to say, “I’m leaving tomorrow.” |
Victor: 我明天要走了。 (Wǒ míngtiān yào zǒu le.) |
Amber: Mm, so, broken down, literally in English, this is “I tomorrow + the verb 要 (yào),” which here means “to be going to do something,” and then then the word for “to leave” which is 走 (zǒu). |
Victor: 走 (Zǒu). And finally, the 了 (le) particle. Here, the 了 (le) particle is part of a grammar pattern that tells us that something is about to happen or going to happen in the near future, soon. In this case, leaving China. |
Amber: Mm. |
Victor: Yeah, and you often hear people say 我要走了 (wǒ yào zǒule). |
Amber: Yeah. This is an illustration of this pattern. It means “I’m about to go,” “I’m going to go,” 我要走了 (wǒ yào zǒule). Okay, now, we have another sentence that’s using a word that we have learned before in other grammar lessons. |
Victor: Yeah, that is 还 (hái), and in this sentence, the 还 (hái) is like how we use “still” in English. |
Amber: Yeah. Here the 还 (hái) is used to emphasize the ongoing duration of a situation or a state. So just so you understand, the sentence we hear it used in here is... |
Victor: 我还要学汉语呢。 (Wǒ hái yào xué hànyǔ ne.) |
Amber: Right. So it means, “I still want/need to study Chinese.” But Victor, what is this 呢 (ne) at the end of the sentence for? We’ve heard these particles before. What is it doing here, this 呢 (ne)? |
Victor: Well, the 呢 (ne) is sometimes used at the end of a declarative sentence to confirm a fact. |
Amber: Yeah. So here, the fact is that he still needs to study Chinese. |
Victor: Right. It’s sort of our way of adding intonation, just in a different way. |
Amber: Mm, and we hear another 还 (hái) used in a sentence as well in this dialogue... |
Victor: 你还回来吗? (Nǐ hái huílái ma?) |
Amber: Right. And this time, this 还 (hái) is literally translated something like “You will still come back?” But in English, maybe, it would be more how we would say, “Are you going to come back?” And speaking of which, this is the last lesson. |
Victor: Well, the last lesson of this Gengo set, but there will be lots more to come. So for now, it's 再见 (zàijiàn), 慢走 (mànzǒu), and 保持联系 (bǎochí liánxì). |
Amber: Yes, being “goodbye,” “take care,” and “keep in touch”! |
Victor: Yeah and keep up the good work! |
Amber: Yes, 加油 (jiāyóu) , keep studying Chinese, and we hopefully will see you in China! |
Victor: Yes. See you in China! |
Amber: Yes. 再见! (Zàijiàn!) |
Victor: 再见! (Zàijiàn!) |
