Your Chinese lessons will go much more smoothly the larger your Chinese Vocabulary grows. Vocabulary is the building block for being able to learn, understand, and use language. When you start to understand the words, you will start to see patterns and rules emerge in the language. Once you understand the similarities in the words, you will be better able to decipher the meanings of new and unfamiliar words. Thus, the number of Chinese phrases that you will be able to use will continue to increase.

You can determine which Chinese characters and words you need to focus on by listening to Chinese speakers or songs, and by reading Chinese literature. Take notice of the words that occur fairly frequently and try to learn those first. By adding to your Chinese vocabulary regularly, you will soon surprise yourself with your ability to speak this intricate language.
