INTRODUCTION
Frank: Hey, everyone.
Echo: Da jia hao!
Frank: Welcome back to ChineseClass101.com, Season 1, Lesson 28 in our Beginner series.
Echo: 第儿十八课。(Dì er shíbā kè.)
Frank: I’m your host, Frank Fradella, and I’m joined in the studio, as always, by my beautiful and amazing, intelligent co-host, Echo.
Echo: 谢谢。我是(Xièxiè. Wǒ shì)Echo.
Frank: Today’s lesson is about ice cream.
Echo: Ice cream.
Frank: I know. Everybody loves ice cream. It’s between two roommates.
Echo: They are speaking casually.
Frank: They’re probably in their apartment.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: Okay. Let’s get on to the lesson now.
Echo: But before we do…
Frank: But before we do, that’s right, we want to remind you guys to head up to ChineseClass101.com…
Echo: And make comments.
Frank: Leave us a comment. We love to hear from you, and we’ll hear from you after this lesson about your favorite ice cream.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: Let’s do it. Let’s hear the dialogue now.

Lesson conversation

秦溯:我们还有冰淇淋吗?(QÍN SÙ: Wǒmen hái yǒu bīngqílín ma?)
张颖:有,有巧克力的。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: Yǒu, yǒu qiǎokèlì de.)
秦溯:但是我对巧克力过敏。(QÍN SÙ: Dànshì wǒ duì qiǎokèlì guòmǐn.)
张颖:哦。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: ò.)
Frank: One more time, just a bit slower.
秦溯:我们还有冰淇淋吗?(QÍN SÙ: Wǒmen hái yǒu bīngqílín ma?)
张颖:有,有巧克力的。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: Yǒu, yǒu qiǎokèlì de.)
秦溯:但是我对巧克力过敏。(QÍN SÙ: Dànshì wǒ duì qiǎokèlì guòmǐn.)
张颖:哦。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: ò.)
Frank: Okay, we’re back. This is essential vocabulary, Echo.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: This is stuff that every woman needs to know.
Echo: Everyone needs to know.
Frank: Well, actually, I would agree with you, especially for me, but we’ll get to that later. Let’s go ahead and translate the dialogue now.
秦溯:我们还有冰淇淋吗?(QÍN SÙ: Wǒmen hái yǒu bīngqílín ma?)
Frank: Do we still have ice cream?
张颖:有,有巧克力的。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: Yǒu, yǒu qiǎokèlì de.)
Frank: Yes, we do. We have chocolate.
秦溯:但是我对巧克力过敏。(QÍN SÙ: Dànshì wǒ duì qiǎokèlì guòmǐn.)
Frank: But I'm allergic to chocolate.
张颖:哦。(ZHĀNG YǏNG: ò.)
Frank: Oh.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Frank: It’s so bad.
Echo: It’s so bad.
Frank: It’s so bad. I actually wrote this dialogue because I am allergic to chocolate.
Echo: Oh.
Frank: It’s terrible. How’s that for being born under a bad sign, folks?
Echo: Yeah. You get my reply.
Frank: But this is why girls like dating me though, because they have all the chocolate to themselves. They don’t have to fight me for the chocolate. Now we do owe you an apology for not giving you this essential vocabulary sooner.
Echo: Yeah. In the first lesson.
Frank: It really should have been the first lesson where everybody, just the word for chocolate really should be right up front.
Echo: We all love chocolate.
Frank: Let’s review the vocab for this lesson.
Echo: Okay.
VOCAB LIST
Male: Now, the vocab section.
Echo: 冰淇淋(bīngqílín) [natural native speed].
Frank: Ice cream.
Echo: 冰淇淋(bīngqílín)[slowly - broken down by syllable]. 冰淇淋(bīngqílín)[natural native speed].
Echo: 对(duì) [natural native speed].
Frank: Towards.
Echo: 对(duì)[slowly - broken down by syllable]. 对(duì)[natural native speed].
Echo: 过敏(guòmǐn) [natural native speed].
Frank: Allergic.
Echo: 过敏(guòmǐn)[slowly - broken down by syllable]. 过敏(guòmǐn)[natural native speed].
KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Frank: Last year or a year before, I had a new boss where I was working in the States and he really liked me and he wanted to show how much he liked me so he went out and bought the birthday cake.
Echo: Yeah?
Frank: He bought this double-decker chocolate fudge thing with like a chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream. Chocolate fudge and chocolate chips.
Echo: Oh my lord.
Frank: I was like, “Okay, so you don’t like me at all. You just want me to…” Let’s take a look at some of these vocab words in more depth.
Echo: 冰淇淋(bīngqílín) [natural native speed].
Frank: The word for “ice cream”. Now you can ask for chocolate ice cream.
Echo: 巧克力冰淇淋(Qiǎokèlì bīngqílín) That’s in the dialogue actually.
Frank: That’s right. But there are other kinds of ice cream. So how would say “vanilla”?
Echo: 香草冰淇淋(Xiāngcǎo bīngqílín)
Frank: How about strawberry?
Echo: 草莓冰淇淋(Cǎoméi bīngqílín) A lot of girls love it.
Frank: Now in China here, you’ve got something…
Echo: You have special…
Frank: This is very specific to China ice cream is all about red bean ice cream.
Echo: 紅豆冰淇淋。(Hóngdòu bīngqílín.)
Frank: And green tea ice cream.
Echo: 绿茶冰淇淋.(Lǜchá bīngqílín.) Yeah. Actually I always have white.
Frank: Let’s go ahead and hear these in some sample sentences.
Echo: Okay.
Frank: Do you have vanilla ice cream?
Echo: 你们有香草冰淇淋吗?(Nǐmen yǒu xiāngcǎo bīngqílín ma?)
Frank: Strawberry ice cream is really good.
Echo: 草莓冰淇淋很好吃。(Cǎoméi bīngqílín hěn hào chī.)
Frank: I don’t like red bean ice cream.
Echo: 我不喜欢红豆冰淇淋。(Wǒ bù xǐhuān hóngdòu bīngqílín.)
Frank: Echo, do you like red bean ice cream?
Echo: Of course not. I don’t like 绿茶冰淇淋(Lǜchá bīngqílín) either. I’m sorry.
Frank: That’s okay.
Echo: But I like chocolate ice cream.巧克力冰淇淋.(Qiǎokèlì bīngqílín.)
Frank: Which is actually our second vocab word for the day.
Echo: 巧克力。(qiǎokelì.)
Frank: Now I can’t eat it myself, but we’re going to give you, folks, the tools that you need to get all your chocolate needs filled. We’re going back to basics here, Echo. Tell me how to just say, “I want chocolate.”
Echo: 我要巧克力。(Wǒ yào qiǎokèlì.)
Frank: Give me chocolate.
Echo: 给我巧克力。(Gěi wǒ qiǎokèlì.)
Frank: Give me chocolate now.
Echo: 给我巧克力,马上,现在!(Gěi wǒ qiǎokèlì, mǎshàng, xiànzài!)
Frank: This is essential vocabulary, folks. We’re sorry it took so long to get it to you. Let’s get on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Male: It’s grammar time!
Frank: Echo, what’s our first grammar point for today?
Echo: The first one is 还.(Hái.)
Frank: Which means?
Echo: Still.
Frank: Exactly. Anything that’s still happening, still occurring, still existing.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: In today’s dialogue, we heard it like this:
Male: 我们还有冰淇淋吗?(Wǒmen hái yǒu bīngqílín ma?)
Female: 我们还有冰淇淋吗?(Wǒmen hái yǒu bīngqílín ma?)
Frank: “Do we still have ice cream?” Now what if you wanted to say, “Do you still have my money?”
Echo: 你还有我的钱吗?(Nǐ hái yǒu wǒ de qián ma?)
Frank: He’s still working.
Echo: 他还在工作。(Tā hái zài gōngzuò.)
Frank: As you probably noticed, this is an adverb. It goes before the verb. Let’s hear some more examples. “I still love her.”
Echo: 我还爱她。(Wǒ hái ài tā.)
Frank: Are you still hungry?
Echo: 你还饿吗?(Nǐ hái è ma?)
Frank: No, I’m good. Thank you. Let’s move on to the next point.
Echo: I want some chocolate ice cream.
Frank: But I’m allergic to chocolate! Which brings us to our next grammar point, how to say you’re allergic to something? Now the structure here is a little bit different than in English. In English, you would say “I am allergic to that thing.” In Chinese, it’s “I toward that thing allergic.”
Echo: 我对(Wǒ duì)somthing过敏。(Guòmǐn.)
Frank: Exactly. It’s just changing the order a little bit but that’s the sentence pattern.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: Now let’s hear a couple of sample sentences here. “What are you allergic to?”
Echo: 你对什么过敏?(Nǐ duì shénme guòmǐn?)
Frank: I’m allergic to this.
Echo: 我对这个过敏?(Wǒ duì zhège guòmǐn?)
Frank: Now how about a couple of really key words that you’re going to need if you have these particular allergies?
Echo: 没错儿。(Méi cuò ér.)
Frank: I am allergic to shrimp.
Echo: 我对虾过敏。虾。(Wǒ duìxiā guòmǐn. Xiā.)
Frank: I am allergic to peanuts.
Echo: 我对花生过敏。花生。(Wǒ duì huāshēng guòmǐn. Huāshēng.)
Frank: My brother is allergic to garlic.
Echo: 我哥哥对蒜过敏。蒜。(Wǒ gēgē duì suàn guòmǐn. Suàn.)
Frank: It actually is which, being Italian, it’s like death allergy. That’s terrible. It’s horrible. I feel bad for him.
Echo: Poor.
Frank: Sorry, Steve. Okay. These are particularly deadly allergies. It’s not like a cat allergy. But how would you say “I’m allergic to cats”?
Echo: 我对猫过敏。(Wǒ duì māo guòmǐn.)
Frank: I’m allergic to milk.
Echo: 我对牛奶过敏。(Wǒ duì niúnǎi guòmǐn.)
Frank: Well, it’s not actually an allergy. We do feel awfully bad when we have to say Goodbye to you, folks. But we’re at the end of the podcast.
Echo: 对啊。(Duì a.)
Frank: We have to go. But before we do, we want to remind you to head up to ChineseClass101.com, check out those PDFs.
Echo: Great.
Frank: They’re absolutely fantastic. They’ve got cultural insights in there. They’ve got grammar notes. Everything that you need to really drive home this stuff.
Echo: 没错儿。(Méi cuò ér.)
Frank: We’ll see you next time. But for now, from Beijing, I’m Frank Fradella.
Echo: 我是(Wǒ shì) Echo
Frank: We’ll see you next time.
Echo: 下次见。(Xià cì jiàn.)
Frank: 再见。(Zàijiàn.)

Hi,

Thanks for the explanation regarding the type of mushroom called xianggu , and that shiitake seems to be main English translation for this. Outside China, I will certainly keep away from anything I see labelled as shiitake. I will also note that Latin term for it. thanks again..

Hello Tony,

Thank you for your comment. 香菇 Xianggu is often translated as shiitake mushroom, some people simply call it dried mushroom. You can also just call it xianggu. I did a bit of research, its scientific name should be lentinus edodes. There are fresh and dried xianggu, and they vary in sizes.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Hi, very useful lesson. I am allergic to the type of mushroom called xiang gu (or heung gu ?) in Chinese. I have never been given a clear definition of this term in English. In one dictionary I saw it translated as shitake mushrooms, but they are smaller and lighter coloured than xiang gu. The xiang gu that almost kills me is big and black or least dark coloured. So,any suggestions on what the English definition is would be appreciated. Thanks
