Echo: Maybe.
Frank: Just to say, “We don’t want you here.”
Echo: Yeah. We don’t have this, we don’t have that.
Frank: There might be something sinister going on.
Echo: This is broken.
Frank: I think that there’s a deeper story here. I want to get to it in future lessons. But for now, let’s do the line-by-line.
Echo: Okay.
刘泰斗:有人看见我的笔了吗?(LIÚ TÀIDǑU: Yǒu rén kànjiàn wǒ de bǐ le ma?)

Echo: Yes. Let’s review those vocabulary.
Frank: Let’s review it all. Let’s do it. Echo, what’s the word for “chair”?
Echo: 椅子。(Yǐzi.)
Frank: He didn’t have a chair. I don’t have a chair.
Echo: 我没有椅子。(Wǒ méiyǒu yǐzi.)
Frank: His pen is missing.
Echo: 他的笔丢了。(Tā de bǐ diūle.)
Frank: Her mouse is broken.
Echo: 她的鼠标坏了。(Tā de shǔbiāo huàile.)
Frank: There is no computer.
Echo: 没有电脑。(Méiyǒu diànnǎo.)
Frank: My keyboard has been fixed.
Echo: 我的键盘坏了。(Wǒ de jiànpán huàile)
Frank: Echo, this guy has get the worst luck. In future lesson, folks, we’re going to teach you how to say things around fire. Things have been flooded. Things have been abducted by alien. But that comes in the elementary series. We’ll just have to wait for that.
Echo: Okay.
Frank: For now, let’s get back to these. “There is no table.”
Echo: 没有桌子。(Méiyǒu zhuōzi.)
Frank: My chair is broken.
Echo: 我的椅子坏了。(Wǒ de yǐzi huàile.)
Frank: My mouse is missing.
Echo: 我的鼠标丢了。(Wǒ de shǔbiāo diūle.)
Frank: The computer’s computer has been fixed.
Echo: 公司的电脑好了。(Gōngsī de diànnǎo hǎole.)
Frank: There we have it. Let’s move on to grammar.

Lesson focus

Male: It’s grammar time.
Frank: Our grammar section is mostly review, but we do have something new for you. Echo?
Echo: 有人。(yǒu rén.)
Frank: This means “someone” or “anyone”.
Echo: Uh-hmm.
Frank: Now if you break down the characters one by one.
Echo: 有(Yǒu)
Frank: Means “to have”.
Echo: 人(Rén)
Frank: Means “people”.
Echo: Uh-hmm
Frank: Have people.
Echo: Right.
Frank: Let’s hear some sample sentences.
Echo: 有人看见我的笔了吗?(Yǒu rén kànjiàn wǒ de bǐ le ma?)
Frank: Has anyone seen my pen?
Echo: 有人在家吗?(Yǒu rén zài jiā ma?)
Frank: Anyone home?
Echo: 有人知道吗?(Yǒurén zhīdào ma?)
Frank: Does anyone know?
Echo: 有人会英语吗?(Yǒurén huì yīngyǔ ma?)
Frank: Our second grammar point today is the review. It’s how to make something possessive.
Echo: 的。(De.)
Frank: This little particle here we’ve been talking about a lot in the last few weeks. Let’s go back to basics here. How do you say, “My pen”?
Echo: 我的笔。(Wǒ de bǐ.)
Frank: Your computer.
Echo: 你的电脑。(Nǐ de diànnǎo.)
Frank: Her chair.
Echo: 她的椅子。(Tā de yǐzi.)
Frank: Your chocolate.
Echo: 我的巧克力。(Wǒ de qiǎokèlì.)not 你的巧克了。(Nǐ de qiǎo kèle.)
Frank: Okay. Echo said, “My chocolate.” I said, “Your chocolate.”
Echo: 是我的。(Shì wǒ de.)
Frank: Yes. Folks, put down the chocolate and back away slowly and nobody gets hurt.
Echo: 所有的巧克力都是我的。(Suǒyǒu de qiǎokèlì dōu shì wǒ de.)
Frank: How about “our chocolate”.
Echo: 我的巧克力.(Wǒ de qiǎokèlì.) Not ours. 我的。(Wǒ de.)
Frank: Our ice cream.
Echo: 我们的冰淇淋。(Wǒmen de bīngqílín.)
Frank: Her computer.
Echo: 她的电脑。(Tā de diànnǎo.)
Frank: Their keyboard.
Echo: 他们的键盘。(Tāmen de jiànpán.)
Frank: So you take the noun, add this particle…
Echo: 的。(De.)
Frank: …and you’ve made a possessive.
Echo: Right.
Frank: For example, “the company’s computer”.
Echo: 公司的电脑。(Gōngsī de diànnǎo.)
Frank: The restaurant’s dumplings.
Echo: 饭馆的饺子。(Fànguǎn de jiǎozi.)
Frank: Echo’s chocolate.
Echo: Echo的巧克力(De qiǎokèlì.)
Frank: It’s all hers.
Echo: Echo is not a noun.
Frank: It’s a proper noun.
Echo: Yes.
Frank: That’s it for us, folks. But before we go, we want to remind you to head up to ChineseClass101.com, check out that voice-recording tool.
Echo: Right.
Frank: You can compare your voice to native speakers to make sure you’re getting those tons right and getting the most out of your studies here.
Echo: Exactly.
Frank: You sound just like a native.
Echo: Yeah, very accurate.
Frank: Nothing is better than that. But for now, from Beijing, I’m Frank Fradella…
Echo: 我是不是(Wǒ shì bùshì)Echo.
Frank: We’ll see you next time.
Echo: 下次见吧。(Xià cì jiàn ba)
Frank: 再见。(Zàijiàn.)
Echo: 丟(Diū) [natural native speed].
Frank: To lose.
Echo: 丟(Diū) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 丟(Diū) [natural native speed].
Echo: 飯館(fànguǎn) [natural native speed].
Frank: Restaurant.
Echo: 飯館(fànguǎn) [slowly - broken down by syllable]. 飯館 (fànguǎn)[natural native speed].

This is pretty close to about as awful a working day as we've had. But we've had it light - I know. What's your worst working experience in China been like?

Haven't received a reply on this yet. Have Pathways actually been activated yet? I received the notice for it, but I don't actually see any functionality for it in the dashboard or this pathway.

Hello Gerald,

Thank you for your comment. 看 describes the action of our eyes, 'to look' or 'to see', and 看见 describes the result of 看, that after you '看 look', you can either 看见 (see) or 没看见 (didn't see) something, which is the result. In this sentence '有人看见我的笔了吗?', the speaker is asking whether someone has seen the pen, not whether someone is performing the action of looking.

Some examples:

他在看书。He is reading a book.

我看见一只小鸟。I see a bird.

Hope it helps. Let us know if you have any questions.

Hi! thanks for the lesson. You said in a comment below that 看见 describes a result, but in this lesson sentence ''有人看见...'' he is asking if someone has seen his pen, how is this a result? I think I'm not getting the difference, can you give us a few examples, please?

Thanks!

Hi Sean,

看 has two meanings which are "to see" or "to look", it describes the action; while 看见 means "to see", it describes the result.

In prior lessons you introduced the word 看 (to see). In this lesson you introduced 看见, which also means to see. (Oh, and of course, the word 见 also means to see.) Are there any basic rules or general common use patterns to help a student know when to use the correct word to mean to see, based on the situation? Thank you!

Hi Ulysse,

You're welcome!!

It might have been a java/browser issue, so please try with another browser, or update to the latest version of Java available for your operating system.

(here is a link to check for updates: http://developer.apple.com/java/)

Hmm yeah I think so... it worked before I used google chrome. I asked my brother who is a programmer, he keeps saying that it's a problem with the plug in. Should I try an other browser ?

Thanks again for your help, Olivia !

Sorry, I meant #available# instead of #disponible# (frenchman mistake).

Ulysse
2011-10-22 07:39:42

Yes ! Thanks a lot ! Unfortunately, I won't have internet for 10 days, starting from tomorrow...

I use a mac 10.6.6 and Google Chrome (version 14.0.835.202)

I tried that tool several times but it didn't work...

It's written : Plug-in disponible to show... and I can't read the end of the sentence. there is a puzzle piece right in the middle of the window.

Thank you so much for fixing that problem ! I will be there in 10 days to see your answer.
