POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Michael: Linda sounds stressed.
Dehua: Yes, she needs more staff!
Michael: How can people recruit staff in China, especially if they’re looking for expats that live there?
Dehua: There are several large recruitment companies.
Michael: Do the companies specialize in certain industries?
Dehua: Yes. For example, Korn Ferry specializes in financial recruitment.
Michael: What about expats who can speak Chinese?
Dehua: They can also use LaowaiCareer and HiredChina.
Michael: A lot of expats work in China in the education field. Do international schools handle their own recruitment?
Dehua: A lot of them post job opportunities on their websites. The employment of English teachers in China is regulated by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs or SAFEA.
Michael: Is there a difference between schools that are licensed by SAFEA, and schools that aren’t?
Dehua: Only licensed schools can apply for the necessary "letter of invitation" and "foreign expert work certificate."
Michael: And those are what you need to get that important Z visa to work in China! Okay, now on to the vocabulary.

Dehua: It begins with 你(nǐ).
Michael: "You." Next is "seem,” “look like."
Dehua: 看起来(kàn qǐlái). Last is 好累(hǎo lèi).

Dehua: 你看起来好累 (nǐ kàn qǐlái hǎo lèi).
Michael: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Dehua: Sure. For example, you can say… 你看起来好累, 还是去休息吧。(Nǐ kàn qǐlái hǎo lèi, háishì qù xiūxi ba.)

Michael: which means "No matter what, you should take a rest, or else you'll get sick."
Michael: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn how to tell others to take a rest.
Michael: You may have to say this to your coworkers at times.
Dehua: Especially if everyone is working very hard.
Michael: So let’s begin by looking at how to give suggestions to your coworkers.
Dehua: After a verb, you can add 一下吧(yīxià ba).
Michael: That means "(you better) do a bit of this." For example,
Dehua: 你休息一下吧。(Nǐ xiūxi yīxià ba.)
Michael: "You need to rest a little bit."
Dehua: There have been some other expressions of suggestions used in this lesson.
Michael: Let’s go through those and remind our listeners of them.
Dehua: 不妨 (bùfáng).
Michael: "Might as well" or "how about."
Dehua: 不要… (bùyào).
Michael: "Don’t." So, that last one is negative.
