Michael: In some cases, it might even be considered a resignation. |
Dehua: If you can’t contact the person in charge, tell a colleague. |
Michael: Make sure it’s a reliable colleague! What should we say if we need a day off? |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Michael: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is |
Dehua: 早日康复。(Zǎorì kāngfù.) |
Michael: "Get well soon." |
Michael: This is our first phrase of this lesson. |
Dehua: First is 早日 (zǎorì). |
Michael: It means “soon.” |
Dehua: Next is 康复(kāngfù). |
Michael: That is “recover” or “get well.” You can use this phrase to wish that someone will recover from an illness. |
Dehua: At the start of the phrase you can add 祝你(zhù nǐ). |
Michael: That means “I wish you…” Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Dehua: Sure. For example, you can say 我已通知公司你将请病假。 希望你早日康复。(Wǒ yǐ tōngzhī gōngsī nǐ jiāng qǐng bìngjià. Xīwàng nǐ zǎorì kāngfù.) |
Michael: which means "I have notified the company that you would have sick leave. I hope you get well soon." |
Michael: Okay, what's the next phrase? |
Dehua: 你在哪儿?(Nǐ zài nǎ'r?) |
Michael: "Where are you?" |
Michael: This is the final phrase of this lesson. |
Dehua: It begins with 你(nǐ). |
Michael: This means “you.” Next is “at.” |
Dehua: 在(zài) Finally is 哪儿(nǎ'r). |
Michael: “where.” This is a very common way to ask someone his or her location. |
Dehua: You can leave out the pronoun and just say 在哪儿?(zài nǎ'r?) |
Michael: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Dehua: Sure. For example, you can say 会议即将开始。你在哪儿?(Huìyì jíjiāng kāishǐ. Nǐ zài nǎ‘r?) |
Michael: which means "The meeting will start soon. Where are you?" |
Michael: Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |
Lesson focus
|
Michael: In this lesson, you'll learn about getting time off when you have to take care of an urgent matter. |
Michael: Anyone can have an emergency and need a day off. Here are some examples of why you may need a day off. |
Dehua: 我女儿病了。(Wǒ nǚ'ér bìngle.) |
Michael: “My daughter got sick.” |
Dehua: 我今天发烧了。(Wǒ jīntiān fāshāole.) |

Michael: “I have to go to the doctor.” |
Dehua: 我得去移民局。(Wǒ dei3 qù yímín jú.) |
Michael: “I have to go to the immigration office.” After giving your reason, you should say that you need a day off. |
Dehua: The best verb for this is 需要 (xūyào). |
Michael: That is “to need.” |
Dehua: So you can say 我需要请假 (wǒ xūyào qǐngjià). |
Michael: “I need a day off.” There’s no mention of how many days off are needed. How do we add the number of days? |
Dehua: Say the number and then 天(tiān) after 请假 (qǐngjià). 我需要请假三天 (Wǒ xūyào qǐngjià sān tiān). |
Michael: “I need to take three days off.” Now, let’s look at some reasons why someone might be late for work. |
Dehua: 今天堵车。(Jīntiān dǔchē.) |

Dehua: 火车暂停服务。(Huǒchē zàntíng fúwù.) |
Michael: “The train service was suspended.” |
Dehua: 我睡过头了。(Wǒ shuì guòtóule.) |

Dehua: 很抱歉 (hěn bàoqiàn). |
Michael: “I’m terribly sorry.” |
Dehua: Or, 不好意思 (bùhǎoyìsi). |
Michael: “Excuse me.” You also need to say that you’ll actually be late. |
Dehua: To do this, you can use the adjective 迟 (chí). |
Michael: “to be late.” Let’s finish this lesson with an example of this all put together. |
Dehua: 今天堵车,我会迟到。(Jīntiān dǔchē, wǒ huì chídào.) |
