Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to answer the question, "What are you good at?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to talk about what you’re good at doing.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
你擅长什么? (Nǐ shàncháng shénme?)
我擅长语言。 (Wǒ shàncháng yǔyán.)
Once more with the English translation.
你擅长什么? (Nǐ shàncháng shénme?)
“What are you good at?”
我擅长语言。 (Wǒ shàncháng yǔyán.)
“I'm good at languages.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “What are you good at?”
That's:
你擅长什么? (Nǐ shàncháng shénme?)
Listen to it again:
你擅长什么?, 你擅长什么? (Nǐ shàncháng shénme?, Nǐ shàncháng shénme?)
This Chinese sentence literally translates as “You good at what?” But it means “What are you good at?”.
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
我擅长[skill]。 (Wǒ shàncháng [skill].)
This Chinese sentence literally translates as “I good at [skill].” But it means “I'm good at [skill].”.
For example:
“I'm good at languages.”
我擅长语言。, 我擅长语言。 (Wǒ shàncháng yǔyán., Wǒ shàncháng yǔyán.)
