Hi everyone! I’m Alisha. |
Welcome to Conversational Phrases! |
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations. |
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event. |
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases! |
Listen to the dialogue. |
你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?) |
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.) |
Once more with the English translation. |
你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?) |
“When is your birthday?” |
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.) |
“It's on March 4th.” |
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?" |
The pattern is: |
[event]是什么时候? ([event] shì shénme shíhou?) |
This Chinese sentence translates as "[event] is when?" But it means “When is [event]?”. |
For example: |
你的生日是什么时候?, 你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?, Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?) |
Now, how do you answer this question? |
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.) |
Listen to it again: |
三月四日。, 三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì., Sān yuè sì rì.) |
This Chinese sentence literally translates as "Three month four day." But it means "It's on March 4th.". |
