Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask the question, "When is your birthday?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask and answer about the date of an event.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?)
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.)
Once more with the English translation.
你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?)
“When is your birthday?”
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.)
“It's on March 4th.”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say "When is [event]?"
The pattern is:
[event]是什么时候? ([event] shì shénme shíhou?)
This Chinese sentence translates as "[event] is when?" But it means “When is [event]?”.
For example:
你的生日是什么时候?, 你的生日是什么时候? (Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?, Nǐ de shēngrì shì shénme shíhou?)
Now, how do you answer this question?
三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì.)
Listen to it again:
三月四日。, 三月四日。 (Sān yuè sì rì., Sān yuè sì rì.)
This Chinese sentence literally translates as "Three month four day." But it means "It's on March 4th.".
