Hi, everybody! This is Rui from ChineseClass101.com. |
Do you know how to say “thank you” in Chinese? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond. |
Let’s start with the easiest one. |
xièxie. |
[slowly] xièxie. |
It means “thank you.” |
If you want to really show your appreciation for something, you should use the following phrase. |
Tài xièxie le. |
[slowly] Tài xièxie le. |
It means “thank you so much.” |
The word 太 (tài) means "a lot." At the end, you can see the word 了 (le) which complete the sentence. |
Together, Tài xièxie le literally means "thanks a lot" or "thank you so much." |
What if you want to say that you appreciate something someone did more than should appreciate you? Here's the way to say it. |
xièxiè nǐ. |
[slowly] xièxiè nǐ. |
You can find the word 你 (nǐ) at the end. It means "you." It's like saying "Thank YOU" in which "you" has been emphasized. |
Now you know 3 different ways to say "thank you" in Chinese! But how do you respond if someone thanks you? |
If someone says "thank you" in Chinese, simply say Bù yòng xiè. It means "You're welcome" or literally, "no need to thank." |
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expressions and repeat after me. |
“Thank you." |
xièxie. |
*beep |
xièxie. |
The way to say “thank you so much.” |
Tài xièxie le. |
*beep |
Tài xièxie le. |
Literally “thank YOU." |
xièxiè nǐ. |
*beep |
xièxiè nǐ. |
And to respond, just say: |
Bù yòng xiè. |

Well done! [pause] |
In China, we don't usually say 谢谢 (xièxie) to our families or our close friends, because the expression creates a sense of distance. Instead of saying the phrase, we always do something else to show our gratitude. |
You just learned three different ways to say “thank you” and how to respond in Chinese. |
