Taiwanese Mandarin Survival Phrases Lesson 12: Counting 10 to 100
In this lesson, we will learn the numbers from 10 to 100.
First, let’s review numbers 1 to 10:
One, 一(yī), first tone
Two, 二(èr), fourth tone
Three, 三(sān), first tone
Four, 四(sì), fourth tone
Five, 五(wǔ), third tone
Six, 六(liù), fourth tone
Seven, 七(qī), first tone
Eight, 八(bā), first tone
Nine, 九(jiǔ), third tone
Ten, 十(shí), second tone
Now, we will look at numbers eleven to nineteen:
To form numbers 11-19, you simply take numbers 1-10 and add them on to the end of 十(shí) which is 10.
For example, to form "11,” simply put 10 and 1 together. Altogether, you have 十一(shí yī).
十一(shí yī) is first in second tone and then first tone.
Let’s continue counting to 19 with the same pattern:
Twelve is 十二(shí èr). This is in second tone and fourth tone. 十二(shí èr).
Thirteen is 十三(shí sān), which is second tone and first tone. 十三(shí sān).
Fourteen is 十四(shí sì); in second tone and fourth tone. 十四(shí sì).
Fifteen is 十五(shí wǔ); second tone and third tone. 十五(shí wǔ).
Sixteen is 十六(shí liù); second tone and fourth tone. 十六(shí liù).
Seventeen is 十七(shí qī); second tone and first tone. 十七(shí qī).
Eighteen is 十八(shí bā); second tone and first tone. 十八(shí bā).
Nineteen is 十九(shí jiǔ); second tone and third tone. 十九(shí jiǔ).
The same pattern can be used for all numbers from ten up to one hundred.
To form twenty, put "two" in front of "ten,” so we have 二十(èr shí). This is in fourth tone then second tone. Once more, 二十(èr shí).
Now, we will follow the same pattern and count from twenty one to twenty nine:
To say “twenty one,” you will say “two,” “ten,” and “one.” Together this is 二十一(èr shí yī). This is in fourth tone, second tone, first tone. 二十一(èr shí yī).
Twenty two is 二十二(èr shí èr). Fourth tone, second tone, fourth tone. 二十二(èr shí èr).
Twenty three is 二十三(èr shí sān). Fourth tone, second tone, first tone. 二十三(èr shí sān).
Twenty four is 二十四(èr shí sì). Fourth tone, second tone, fourth tone. 二十四(èr shí sì).
Twenty five is 二十五(èr shí wǔ). Fourth tone, second tone, third tone 二十五(èr shí wǔ).
Twenty six is 二十六(èr shí liù). Fourth tone, second tone, fourth tone. 二十六(èr shí liù).
Twenty seven is 二十七(èr shí qī). Fourth tone, second tone, first tone. 二十七(èr shí qī).
Twenty eight is 二十八(èr shí bā). Fourth tone, second tone, first tone. 二十八(èrshí bā)
Twenty nine is 二十九(èr shí jiǔ). Fourth tone, second tone, third tone. 二十九(èr shí jiǔ)
Finally, here are the base numbers from forty to ninety:
Forty is 四十(sì shí). Fourth tone, second tone. 四十(sì shí).
Fifty is 五十(wǔ shí). Third tone, second tone. 五十(wǔ shí).
Sixty is 六十(liù shí). Fourth tone, second tone. 六十(liù shí).
Seventy is 七十(qī shí). First tone, second tone. 七十(qī shí).
Eighty is 八十(bā shí). First tone, second tone. 八十(bā shí).
Ninety is 九十(jiǔ shí). Third tone, second tone. 九十(jiǔ shí).
