Eric: Top 25 Chinese Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 24- Have you been to China? In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Chinese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Have you been to China?” In Chinese this is
Cho: 你去过中国吗?
The first word in the question is
Cho: 你
Eric: meaning “you” in English.
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 你
Eric: Listen again and repeat.
Cho: 你
{Pause}
Eric: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Cho: 去过
Eric: meaning “to have been to” or “to have gone to”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 去过
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 去过
{Pause}
Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Cho: 你去过
{pause}
Eric: And next,
Cho: 中国
Eric: meaning “China.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 中国
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 中国
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Cho: 你去过中国
{pause}
Eric: And next
Cho: 吗?
Eric: which is a particle at the end of a question.
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 吗
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 吗
{Pause}
Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Cho: 你去过中国吗?
{pause}
Eric: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “have you been to China?”
Cho: 去过,去过两次。
Eric: "Yes, I have been twice.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Cho: (Slow) 去过,去过两次。
{pause}
Eric: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word,
Cho: 去过
Eric: means “have been to” or “have gone to.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 去过
Eric: Now repeat
Cho: 去过
{Pause}
Eric: And after that comes
Cho: 两次
Eric: meaning “two times.”
Cho: (Slow, by syllable) 两次
Eric: Now repeat.
Cho: 两次
{Pause}
Eric: Listen to the speaker say, “yes, I have been twice,” and then repeat.
Cho: 去过, 去过两次.
{pause}
Eric: To use a different phrase, replace “twice” with “four times.”
Cho: 四次
Eric: four times
Cho: (slow) 四次 (regular) 四次
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “four times.”
Cho: 去过,去过四次。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “twice” with “four times.” Say, “yes, I've been four times.”
{pause}
Cho: 去过,去过四次。
Eric: To use a different phrase, replace “four times” with “once.”
Cho: 一次
Eric: once
Cho: (slow) 一次 (regular) 一次
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with once.
Cho: 去过,去过一次。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “four times” with “once.” Say, “yes, I've been once.”
{pause}
Cho:去过,去过一次。
Eric: To expand on the pattern, replace “once” with “three times.”
Cho: 三次
Eric: three times
Cho: (slow) 三次 (regular) 三次
Eric: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “three times.”
Cho: 去过,去过三次。
Eric: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “once” with “three times.” Say, “yes, I've been three times.”
{pause}
Cho: 去过,去过三次。
Eric: To say "no" in a simple way, just say
Cho: 我没去过.
Eric: This is like saying “no, I haven’t” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Cho: (Slowly) 我没去过.
Eric: And one more time at normal speed.
Cho: 我没去过.
Eric: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are in a conversation with a Chinese native speaker, and he or she asks you, “have you been to China?” You want to answer, “yes, I've been twice.” Respond to the question.
Cho: 你去过中国吗? (five seconds) 去过,去过兩次。
Eric: Now you want to say, “yes, I've been four times.” Respond to the question.
