Echo: 对,去看中国医生。(Duì, qù kàn zhòng guó yīshēng.) |

Echo: 没错。所以我会在我们这些课里,多说中文。 (Méi cuò. Suǒyǐ wǒ huì zài wǒmen zhèxiē kè lǐ, duō shuō zhōngwén.) |
David: Yes. Echo was going into full Chinese mode. |
Echo: Hmm. |
David: So if you have questions, you’ve got to go to the website. |
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.) |
David: So Echo, what were you saying, I didn’t understand? |
Echo: 对,我会说... 再听一遍。(Duì, wǒ huì shuō... Zài tīng yībiàn.) |
David: And she’ll tell you, go, go back to the easier lesson or listen again. Anyway, we’ve got a lesson here that takes place. |
Echo: 在一个医院里。(Zài yīgè yīyuàn lǐ.) |
David: Yes, it’s a page on a doctor and the patient is getting treatment, Chinese style. |
Echo: 没错。 (Méi cuò.) |
David: Right. So let’s go take a listen. |
DIALOGUE |
A: 大夫,您瞧我没大碍吧? |
B: 现在还不好说。先去照个CT,再做个B超看看。 |
A: 有必要这么复杂吗? |
B: 当然。噢,顺便再抽管儿血。 |
A: 可我只是手疼呀。 |
B: 我知道。可我是作医生的,要对病人负责。 |
A: 但是,这, 这得多少钱啊? |
B: 你不是有公费医疗吗?急什么?报完销不还是你的。 |
David: Once more, a bit slower. |
A: 大夫,您瞧我没大碍吧? (Dàifu, nín qiáo wǒ méi dà ài ba?) |
B: 现在还不好说。先去照个CT,再做个B超看看。(Xiànzài hái bù hǎoshuō. xiān qù zhào ge CT, zài zuò ge Bchāo kànkan.) |
A: 有必要这么复杂吗? (Yǒu bìyào zhème fùzáma?) |
B: 当然。噢,顺便再抽管儿血。(Dāngrán. o, shùnbiàn zài chōu guǎn ér xiě.) |
A: 可我只是手疼呀。(Kě wǒ zhǐ shì shǒu téng yā.) |
B: 我知道。可我是作医生的,要对病人负责。(Wǒ zhīdào. kě wǒ shì zuò yīshēng de, yào duì bìngrén fùzé.) |
A: 但是,这, 这得多少钱啊? (Dànshì, zhè, zhè de duō shǎo Qián A1?) |
B: 你不是有公费医疗吗?急什么?报完销不还是你的。(Nǐ bù shì yǒu gōngfèiyīliáo ma? jí shénme? bào wán xiāo bùhuán shì nǐ de.) |
David: And now with the English translation. |
A: 大夫,您瞧我没大碍吧? (Dàifu, nín qiáo wǒ méi dà ài ba?) |
David: Doctor, there isn't something seriously wrong about me, is there? |
B: 现在还不好说。先去照个CT,再做个B超看看。(Xiànzài hái bù hǎoshuō. xiān qù zhào ge CT, zài zuò ge Bchāo kànkan.) |
David: It's still hard to say now. Take a CT scan and then an ultrasound and we'll see. |
A: 有必要这么复杂吗? (Yǒu bìyào zhème fùzáma?) |
David: Does it have to be this complicated? |
B: 当然。噢,顺便再抽管儿血。(Dāngrán. o, shùnbiàn zài chōu guǎn ér xiě.) |
David: Of course. And we'll have to take a blood test too. |
A: 可我只是手疼呀。(Kě wǒ zhǐ shì shǒu téng yā.) |
David: But I've only got a hurt hand. |
B: 我知道。可我是作医生的,要对病人负责。(Wǒ zhīdào. kě wǒ shì zuò yīshēng de, yào duì bìngrén fùzé.) |
David: I know. But I'm a doctor, I need to be responsible for my patients. |
A: 但是,这, 这得多少钱啊? (Dànshì, zhè, zhè de duō shǎo Qián A1?) |
David: But… then how much will this cost? |
B: 你不是有公费医疗吗?急什么?报完销不还是你的。(Nǐ bù shì yǒu gōngfèiyīliáo ma? jí shénme? bào wán xiāo bùhuán shì nǐ de.) |
David: Don't you have insurance? What's the fuss? File the expenses and you'll get it all back. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Echo: 我觉得有很多的朋友都说,医生给他们开很多药,或者很多不需要的检查,但是我自己去医院的感觉还不错,没有,没有什么不好,我觉得。 (Wǒ juédé yǒu hěnduō de péngyǒu dōu shuō, yīshēng gěi tāmen kāi hěnduō yào, huòzhě hěnduō bù xūyào de jiǎnchá, dànshì wǒ zìjǐ qù yīyuàn de gǎnjué hái bùcuò, méiyǒu, méiyǒu shé me bù hǎo, wǒ juédé.) |
David: It depends, as always, if you can find a good doctor. |
Echo: 对,也碰运气。 (Duì, yě pèng yùnqì.) |
David: Yes. Anyway, our vocab section today is all about medical terminology. |
Echo: Yes. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
David: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of these words and phrases. Our first word is... |
Echo: 照CT (zhào CT). |
David: To take a CT scan. |
Echo: 照CT (zhào CT). |
David: Right. CT is English. |
Echo: 这个照呢,是照相的照。(Zhège zhào ne, shì zhàoxiàng de zhào.) |
David: Yeah, it’s taking a photo. So together again. |
Echo: 照CT (zhào CT). |
David: Right. |
Echo: 举个例子,我们可以说 (Jǔ gè lìzi, wǒmen kěyǐ shuō)... |
Echo: 照CT可以显示你脑部的血管有没有堵塞。 (zhào CT kěyǐ xiǎnshì nǐ nǎo bù de xiěguǎn yǒu méiyǒu dǔsè.) |
David: Echo is being really fatalistic in these sample sentences. “A CT scan will show whether you have a blood clot in your brain.” |
Echo: Right. 照CT可以显示你脑部的血管有没有堵塞。(Zhào CT kěyǐ xiǎnshì nǐ nǎo bù de xiěguǎn yǒu méiyǒu dǔsè.) |
David: Our next verb is “to take an ultrasound”. |
Echo: 作个B超。 (Zuò gè B chāo.) |
David: Right, which is the phrase, which is to do, to 作 (zuò). |
Echo: Mmm. |
David: B超 (B chāo). |
Echo: B超 (B chāo). |
David: Which again is this weird mix of English. Do you know why it’s B? |
Echo: 我不太懂这个医学,但我觉得可能跟医学的,那个,那个行为的词有关。 |
David: Well, I mean, is there, is there an A超 (A chāo)? I mean 超 (chāo), it’s like 超 (chāo) is, it’s “super,” very, like 超人(chāorén). |
Echo: 就超声波。(Jiù chāoshēngbō.) |
David: Yes. And then B is some kind of B. |
Echo: 我希望我们的听众们能够给我们一个解答吧。(Wǒ xīwàng wǒmen de tīngzhòngmen nénggòu gěi wǒmen yīgè jiědá ba.) |
David: Yes, if you were a doctor and you know if there is an A超 (A chāo), let us know. |
Echo: 没错,非常感谢。(Méi cuò, fēicháng gǎnxiè.) |
David: We, we don’t understand why it’s B. So, we know how to take a CT scan. |
Echo: 照CT (zhào CT). |
David: We know how to take an ultrasound. |
Echo: 作B超。 (Zuò B chāo.) |
David: This is how to draw blood. |
Echo: 抽血 (chōuxiě) |
David: To draw blood. |
Echo: 抽血 (chōuxiě) |
David: Right, so it literally means “draw blood.” In medical term, it means, we’re gonna give you a blood test. |
Echo: 对,一般口语里我们会说,我们去抽管血。(Duì, yībān kǒuyǔ lǐ wǒmen huì shuō, wǒmen qù chōu guǎn xuè.) |
David: Right, and so, we’re putting the word for “tube” in the middle there. |
Echo: 管。(Guǎn.) 抽管血。不能抽太多了。 (Chōu guǎn xuè. Bùnéng chōu tài duōle.) |
David: Yes. |
Echo: 一管就可以了。(Yī guǎn jiù kěyǐle.) |
David: Why? It doesn’t say how big the tube is gonna be, but… |
Echo: 现在你也照完CT了,也做完B超了,也抽完血了... (Xiànzài nǐ yě zhào wán CTle, yě zuò wán B chāole, yě chōu wán xuèle...) |
David: Yes and it happens. All of it. |
Echo: Right. |
David: And they want you to pay for it. |
Echo: 该付钱了。(Gāi fùqián le.) |
David: Right. |
Echo: 这个时候,如果你有公费医疗... (Zhège shíhòu, rúguǒ nǐ yǒu gōngfèi yīliáo...) |
David: Things are better and that’s publicly paid medical treatment. |
Echo: 公费医疗 (gōngfèiyīliáo) |
David: Which is the two words put together. |
Echo: Mm-hmm. |
David: We have “publicly paid….” |
Echo: 公费(gōngfèi) |
David: Which is the opposite of “privately paid.” |
Echo: 自费 (zìfèi) |
David: So, publicly paid medical treatment. |
Echo: 公费医疗 (gōngfèi yīliáo) |
David: And you can also say… |
Echo: 自费医疗 (zìfèi yīliáo) |
David: If you’re paying out of pocket. |
Echo: 如果你是自费医疗,你可能不想要医生给你这么多的检查。(Rúguǒ nǐ shì zìfèi yīliáo, nǐ kěnéng bùxiǎng yào yīshēng gěi nǐ zhème duō de jiǎnchá.) |
David: Yes. You will probably want to cut down on the traditional Chinese medicine that they’re gonna throw your way. So, with that, let’s get to our grammar section. |
Lesson focus
|
David: Our grammar point today is all about convenience. |
Echo: 没错,这个词也非常有用 - 顺便。(Méi cuò, zhège cí yě fēicháng yǒuyòng - shùnbiàn.) |
David: In the process or at your convenience. |
Echo: 顺便 (shùnbiàn)。在对话中我们听到这句话,你顺便再去抽管儿血。(Zài duìhuà zhōng wǒmen tīng dào zhè jù huà, nǐ shùnbiàn zài qù chōu guǎn ér xuè.) |
David: While you’re at it, why don’t you have a blood test? |
Echo: 顺便再去抽管儿血。(Shùnbiàn zài qù chōu guǎn ér xuè.) |
David: Right. So it’s a big hospital and you need to go all the way to the other side to get these tests done. While you’re there, we may as well -- |
Echo: 最好就再做这个。(Zuì hǎo jiù zài zuò zhège.) |
David: Yes. You may as well give them some blood. For another example, say you want to go out and pick up some milk. |
Echo: Okay. 我想出去走走,顺便买点儿牛奶。(Wǒ xiǎng chūqù zǒu zǒu, shùnbiàn mǎidiǎn er niúnǎi.) |
David: Right. Here, the phrase is… |
Echo: 顺便买点牛奶。(shùnbiàn mǎidiǎn er niúnǎi.) |
Echo: 我想出去走走,顺便买点儿牛奶。(Wǒ xiǎng chūqù zǒu zǒu, shùnbiàn mǎidiǎn er niúnǎi.) |
David: For another example, say you work at a company. |
Echo: Mm-hmm. |
David: And they’ve put the water cooler and the soda in the kitchen. All of that stuff is by the executive’s desk and so you got, you know, you gotta get up and you got to walk half a mile to the kitchen and then come back. So, a friend is gonna do this. You may want to ask him or her, “While you’re there, can you pour a glass of water for me?” |
Echo: 你能不能顺便给我也倒点水? (Nǐ néng bùnéng shùnbiàn gěi wǒ yě dào diǎn er shuǐ?) |
David: Can you give me some water while you’re there? |
Echo: 你能不能顺便给我也倒点水? (Nǐ néng bùnéng shùnbiàn gěi wǒ yě dào diǎn er shuǐ?) |
David: That said, this is not the only word you can use for this. |
Echo: No. |
David: There is a more 口语 (kǒuyǔ) version as well. |
Echo: 没错,我们有这个词,顺手。(Méi cuò, wǒmen yǒu zhège cí, shùnshǒu.) |
David: Which means the same thing. |
Echo: 顺手。(Shùnshǒu.) |
Echo: 能不能顺手也给我倒点水? (Néng bùnéng shùnshǒu yě gěi wǒ dào diǎn shuǐ?) |
David: Right, or in the blood test example. |
Echo: 顺手再抽管儿血。(Shùnshǒu zài chōu guǎnr xuè.) |
David: There is one important difference though, which is… |
Echo: 顺手 (Shùnshǒu.) |
David: Can be used as an adjective too. |
Echo: 没错,所以你可以说 (Méicuò, suǒyǐ nǐ kěyǐ shuō) - 这台新电脑挺顺手的。(Zhè tái xīn diànnǎo tǐng shùnshǒu de.) |
David: Although you’re not really talking about the computer. You’re also saying, you know, I am, I.... |
Echo: 我用起来很方便。(Wǒ yòng qǐlái hěn fāngbiàn.) |
David: Yes, when I use it. I’m very 顺手 (shùnshǒu.), so it’s weird. Are you talking about the computer, are you talking about yourself? |
Echo: 这就是一个你使用的感受。(Zhè jiùshì yīgè nǐ shǐyòng de gǎnshòu.) |
David: Yeah. You’re, you’re really talking about the person. |
Echo: 对。这台新电脑挺顺手的。(Duì. Zhè tái xīn diànnǎo tǐng shùnshǒu de.) |
Outro
|
David: Right. So, that’s our lesson for today. Before we go, Echo, there’s something you wanted to say. |
Echo: 没错。你们想参观我们在北京的录音室吗?(Méicuò. Nǐmen xiǎng cānguān wǒmen zài běijīng de lùyīn shì ma?) |
David: If so, you have to write to us and then we can get you in here. If you’re not in Beijing though, we have a line by line, voice-recording tool on ChineseClass101.com. |
Echo: 没错。非常好用,非常顺手。(Méicuò. Fēicháng hǎo yòng, fēicháng shùnshǒu.) |
David: Right, and it is the second best thing to being here in our studio is you’re gonna hear your own voice… |
Echo: 没错。(Méicuò.) |
David: Coming through Chinese Class 101. |
Echo: 对。(Duì.) |
David: So, give that a try if you haven’t yet. |
Echo: Mm-hmm. |
David: It can, it can really help you pick up on areas where you don’t realize you sound different than Chinese speakers. |
Echo: 对。(Duì.) |
David: That’s said though, we’re done for today. |
David: Thanks a lot for listening, come and check us out on the site. |
Echo: 我们网上见吧。拜拜!(Wǒmen wǎngshàng jiàn ba. Bàibài!) |
